My name is Marc. I'm a Flash animator / Actionscript programmer living in Southampton in the south of England. I've worked in IT for many years and have programmed software applications, databases and developed interfaces on every type of computer from mainframes, minis, to servers to PCs.

Out of the hundreds of programs I've used through the years Adobe Flash (previously called Macromedia Flash) is by far my favourite. Flash fills, thrills and challenges both my technical and artistic abilities.

Flash has an incredibly powerful programming language, called Actionscript, behind the graphics which permits extremely flexible control of the stage of the animation. (The stage in Flash is where you do your design and grphic layout) Actually, you can generate the whole perfect interfaced stage through just the code of Actionscript. (I programme in both Actionscript 2 and Actionscript 3...see below for differences)

Some people have asked me if living in Southampton has been difficult for me to get business. My response is that living in Southampton is no different than living anywhere else and like all Flash designer your location has really little bearing on the creation of your work. Animation is something that can be done anywhere...which is what makes Southampton as good as any to do what I do. Why Flash animation?

Flash animation allows complete flexibility between my artistic abilities and technical experience. Flash is, as far as I'm concerned, the most complete and flexible software application I've ever used.

Why do I consider Flash so fantastic? Out of the hundreds of programs I have used over the years Flash has made it so easily possible.   It has facilitated every possible creative choice made. Flash has an incredible user interface and permits a beginning animator or an advanced animator to create quality animations on the same interface. Flash encompasses a wide range of flexibility in all aspects of animation and nothing compares to it. There are applications whose abilities have always afforded them top ranking in her class/category for ease, usage and flexibility of use; examples are: Microsoft Excel for spreadsheets, FileMaker for databases, Microsoft Word for word processing, Adobe Photoshop for photo retouching etc work...they all merit their rank in the jobs they do, but Flash stands above them all in my mind. I consider myself lucky that as an animator I have Flash to work with.

How I work

Working with Flash to create projects is no different than any other program...so, as with all work/projects a well formulated plan up front is imperative if you want a complete and quality outcome without any band-aid after the fact fixes. The process for creating Flash animations for my clients depends on the project in question. If you have an exact idea of your animation content, layout, and final working, I can look at it and tell you how long it will take me to create it in Flash. If the idea for your animation is only vague, then we would discuss everything from concept to final workings before I do anything in Flash. Many years in system development have shown me that creating something in Adobe Flash is no different than any other application. IE excellent upfront planning is the only way to get the job done without any band-aid changes in the long run. So my process is simple...: 1) discuss the project in detail 2)   think 3) discuss 4) think 5) plan 6) plan 7) discuss 8) think, think, and think again 9) only then do I open Adobe Flash!
